From NDG roots to World Cup stage<\/h2>\n

There is something quietly poetic about the career trajectory of Mauro Biello\u2013a career that begins in the neighbourhood parks of Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Gr\u00e2ce (NDG) neighbourhood and stretches, decades later, into the electric tunnels of a FIFA World Cup in Qatar. For Biello, the game has been an integral part of his existence, first on the pitch and now on the sidelines.<\/p>\n

“I was always outside,” he says. “Whether it was playing soccer, hockey with my friends in front of the house or in the park.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is a kind of universality in that upbringing\u2013no grand design, no curated pathway, just repetition, instinct and a growing attachment to the beautiful game.<\/p>\n

Soccer, in those early years, was not even the dominant sport in his household. “It was actually more of a hockey household, believe it or not,” he admits. Yet like so many children of Italian heritage, his connection to the game crystallized through the World Cup. He recalls 1982 vividly: the emotion, the pride, the urgency in his father’s voice calling home for updates.<\/p>\n

“That was the first time that I really had the opportunity to watch it and see the passion,” he says. In those moments, something took hold and did not let go.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

His earliest memories of playing are stripped down to their essence.<\/p>\n

“You only understand two things: the goal that you can’t allow them to score and the goal where you’ve got to score.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is a child’s interpretation of the game, but also, in many ways, its purest truth. That clarity carried him through the ranks from local associations to provincial teams and, eventually, to Canada’s U-17 side where he competed on the world stage as a teenager.<\/p>\n

When he signed with the Montreal Impact, the infrastructure that now defines Canadian soccer simply did not exist. “There was less coaching, there was less infrastructure, there was less exposure,” he reflects.<\/p>\n

Over 16 seasons with the club, Biello became synonymous with the Impact, amassing more than 300 appearances and over 70 goals-still among the most enduring marks in the organization’s history. His trophy cabinet reflects that consistency: APSL champion in 1994, USL First Division titles in 2004 and 2009 and five USL Cups. In a city that values loyalty, his number 20 was eventually retired\u2013an honour that cements his legacy as a player. At the 41-minute mark of the qualifying game tween Italy and Bosnia-Herzegovina on March 31st, when that red card was raised for all to see, and the wounded soul of the young player Bastoni walked off the field, we knew we had lost.<\/p>\n

The colossal emotion we invest in the game of soccer is truly a universal mystery. As a young teacher, I remember a visit by our local priest in my classroom of grade four students. His visits were regular in the Catholic school system where I taught. On one occasion the priest asked if anyone knew what the meaning of the Holy Trinity was… the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Of course, there is always a quick and confident student ready with a response either to provoke a laugh or because he knows the answer. With a polite smirk he responded: “Of course not Father. Don’t you know? It’s a mystery!”<\/p>\n

Soccer, or football as it is known in other countries, is more than a game. It truly is puzzling to me how 11 players trying to kick a ball into a net can raise the voices of a hundred thousand spectators to a glorious chorus of elated madness and joy. It cannot simply be because we are nationalists. It cannot simply be because it is a cultural phenomenon. Of course, it is a matter of national pride but also big business and big money and all that accompanies that.<\/p>\n

It is, after all, played all over the world. It is a sport anyone can enjoy and take part in without much cost. In places where poverty is a sad and cruel reality, soccer is king. There\u2019s a quote by French novelist Albert Camus that has always resonated with me: In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me, an invincible summer.<\/p>\n

To me, that means creating a sort of wellspring of joy that acts much like a bank account. We both build and draw from this resource, dipping into it when hardships inevitably come our way. I suppose that is partly why so many of us take such valiant efforts in planning vacations and making the most of this season. Whether you’re going abroad or spending weekends at the cottage, by this time of year, we are simply bursting at the seams, eager to make some good time deposits in that emotional reservoir.<\/p>\n

Which leads me to why I chose this specific destination\u2013I think it is the sort of place that pays dividends long after the holiday is over.<\/p>\n

In the height of summer, when places like Capri and Positano are buckling under the pressure of over-tourism, venturing slightly south to Cilento offers the kind of southern Italian holiday that will get you through a Canadian winter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Set along the southern edge of Campania, encompassing the province of Salerno, this expansive UNESCO-listed region unfolds across mountains, farmland and more than<\/p>\n

100 kilometres of coastline, where sandy beaches give way to rugged cliffs and hidden coves. Instead of dealing with shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, jam-packed restaurants with less-than-local food etched out on menu boards for tired and hungry tourists searching for some semblance of la dolce vita, Cilento feels like a place where a more authentic rhythm of life remains intact. Rita Covello, travel designer and CEO of Tailors for Tourism (TT), puts it this way:<\/p>\n

“While the Amalfi Coast is a glamorous diva, Cilento is the authentic, understated sibling.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those under-the-radar sibs are the ones to watch.<\/p>\n

For a first visit, Covello recommends staying at least five to seven days. “It is definitely not a hit-and-run destination,” she says, noting renting a car is essential to move between coast and inland, where distances are greater than they appear and public transit is limited.<\/p>\n

Despite that lagging infrastructure, the area has been gaining traction in recent years. With the opening of the Salerno-Costa d’Amalf Airport, Cilento is attracting more international visitors, many deliberately sidestepping Italy’s most saturated destinations.<\/p>\n

Touted as the ‘Green soul of Campania,’ it is very much a land of contrasts.<\/p>\n

“The true spirit of Cilento lies in the duality between its waters and its mountains,” adds Covello.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Along the coastline, long stretches of Blue Flag beaches give way to rocky inlets and sea caves, best experienced by boat along the shores of Palinuro and Marina di Camerota.<\/p>\n
