“The thing about Mario Draghi is that when he ran up the pitch, he would always pass the ball – he was generous like that,” reflects Staffan de Mistura, a UN diplomat and school friend of Italy’s likely next prime minister. <\/strong><\/p>

“Mario was a team player. Not the best footballer we had but a good one – and he always had a strategy, he knew which way to turn.”<\/p>

Collaboration and a clear sense of direction: exactly the qualities Italy’s star economist will need once again as he aims for the goal of leading this country through its deepest economic crisis since World War Two amidst a pandemic that has killed more than 90,000 Italians.<\/p>

It is the culmination of a glittering career for a man whom colleagues and friends describe as “serious” and “reliable”.<\/p>

A traumatic childhood<\/h2>

Born in 1947 to a well-off Roman family, Mario Draghi came of age early: he was 15 when his father, a manager at the Bank of Italy, died. He lost his mother, a pharmacist, soon after.<\/p>

Cos\u00ec, alle 21:33 del 2 febbraio, il capo dello Stato ha ufficializzato la decisione di affidare a Draghi il tentativo di formare un governo tecnico, \u00abdi alto profilo\u00bb, dopo le dimissioni di Giuseppe Conte.<\/p>

Mario Draghi \u2014 nato a Roma il 3 settembre 1947, dal 1973 sposato con Serenella, due figli \u2014 si laurea all’universit\u00e0 La Sapienza di Roma nel 1970, con l’economista Federico Caff\u00e8<\/a>, per poi ottenere un dottorato in Economia al Massachusetts Institute of Techonology. <\/p>

Dopo essere stato accademico di rango (all\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Trento, di Padova e di Venezia), tra il 1984 e il 1990 \u00e8 Direttore esecutivo della Banca Mondiale e, dal 1991 al 2001, diventa Direttore generale del ministero del Tesoro.<\/p>
