To be clear, it is unequivocal good news that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/the-godfather\">The Godfather<\/a>\u00a0is being rereleased. The pretext is its 50th anniversary but, really, it should be reissued every year for the sheer cinematic hell of it. Excellent, too, that it is being followed by both sequels. (Yes, The Godfather III deserves your love.) To see these genius films on a big screen, in a dark room, the way they were intended, etc etc:\u00a0<em>bellissimo<\/em>! And yet on another level: irrelevant. In 2022, we are watching <em>The Godfather<\/em> all the time already.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2022\/mar\/04\/this-thing-of-ours-why-does-the-godfather-still-ring-true-50-years-on\">Click here to read more<\/a><\/div><\/div><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31576dc1-20d5-4d8b-9a74-da0e0a10078f\">Paramount seeks to recast its role as \u2018The Godfather\u2019 turns 50<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31576dc1-20d5-4d8b-9a74-da0e0a10078f\">FinancialTime<\/a> &#8211; As a fan of 1970s cinema, I have seen <em>The Godfather<\/em> more times than I can count, but never on a big screen. So when an invitation arrived recently to watch a restored print of the Francis Ford Coppola classic \u2014 at Paramount Studios, no less \u2014 I accepted immediately. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%2Fproduction%2F58f02bed-b4c4-4820-b006-abd7e16f6289.jpg?fit=scale-down&amp;source=next&amp;width=700\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><p>The screening last Tuesday of <em>The Godfather<\/em>, the greatest 175 minutes in the studio\u2019s history, was to kick off celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the film\u2019s release on March 24. Paramount rolled out the red carpet for Coppola, who attended with two members of the cast \u2014 James Caan, who played hotheaded Sonny Corleone, and Talia Shire, who was Sonny\u2019s little sister, Connie. It was a cool, windy evening by Los Angeles standards but the crowd of film executives, reporters and other industry figures seemed happy to stand outside and watch the Hollywood legends pose for photos. When the guests finally moved into the Paramount Theatre, I overheard a man confess to colleagues: \u201cI know it\u2019s a clich\u00e9, but when people ask me for my favourite film, I always say it\u2019s <em>The Godfather<\/em>. It just is.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31576dc1-20d5-4d8b-9a74-da0e0a10078f\">Click here to read more<\/a><\/div><\/div><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6154584\/the-godfather-50th-anniversary\/\">Finding New Meaning in The Godfather on Its 50th Anniversary<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>Time &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.time.com\/2005\/02\/12\/all-time-100-movies\/?iid=ent-main-feature#the-godfather-parts-i-and-ii-1972-1974\"><em>The Godfather<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a movie about organized crime, focusing on one dynasty in particular. But it\u2019s most specifically a movie about fathers and sons, which may be the quality that gives it such enduring power. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/api.time.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/the-godfather-anniversary.jpg?w,1600,quality,70\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><p>Its violence is vigorous and brutal; in adapting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/covers\/0,16641,19780828,00.html\">Mario Puzo\u2019s novel<\/a>, Francis Ford Coppola gives us a portrait of domineering masculinity in overdrive. But there\u2019s a strange tenderness at work in it too, all radiating from and toward Marlon Brando\u2019s crime boss Don Vito Corleone. He wields power over every outsider who has come to\u2014or been forced to\u2014respect him. But his relationships with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.time.com\/2013\/11\/11\/sibling-rivalry-10-feuding-movie-brothers\/slide\/the-godfather-parts-i-and-ii\/\">his sons by birth<\/a>, James Caan\u2019s Sonny, Al Pacino\u2019s Michael and John Cazale\u2019s Fredo, as well as his de facto adopted son, Robert Duvall\u2019s Tom Hagen, generate the fierce energy that drives the film. Tratto dal libro omonimo di Mario Puzo, immediatamente acquistato dalla Paramount per il cinema, rischiava di rimanere senza un regista. Sergio Leone rifiut\u00f2 per girare &#8220;C&#8217;era una volta in America&#8221;, Sam Peckinpah litig\u00f2 con la produzione per la sua visione western del racconto, Bogdanovich, Kazan e perfino il veterano del gangster movie Arthur Penn si tirarono indietro. Preoccupato cerca di capire da dove provenga, getta via le lenzuola e invece della testa di cavallo mozzata trova il radiatore della sua vecchia auto.
