As played by Jim Carrey, Truman Burbank \u2013 surrounded by actors, his every move dogged by cameras \u2013 stares at a stage set and believes that it\u2019s real. In the film\u2019s final scene he climbs the stairs, finds a door and prepares to escape his gilded cage.<\/p><p>That keynote image \u2013 Truman\u2019s ascent against a painted sky \u2013 is now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.festival-cannes.com\/en\/infos-communiques\/communique\/articles\/the-official-poster-of-the-75th-festival-de-cannes\">the official poster<\/a>\u00a0for the forthcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/cannesfilmfestival\">Cannes film festival<\/a>, soon to be plastered on programmes, Blu-Tacked in shop windows and rigged like a godhead across the concrete Palais. And while we should be wary of judging an event by its cover, the choice of image feels apt. The organisers picked it, they say, because it \u201crepresents a poetic celebration of the quest for expression and freedom\u201d. Et le bourdonnement cannois circulait d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans les rues, ce m\u00e9lange bab\u00e9lien de fran\u00e7ais, d\u2019anglais, d\u2019italien, d\u2019allemand, interrompu par les klaxons des chauffeurs grognant contre les embouteillages.
