O\u2019Farrell now helps potential expats with immigration advice, finding work and the biggest errors to avoid. Here are his top tips for anyone thinking of relocating to Italy.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1100x619_cmsv2_44e832cf-d72f-57f2-92f7-cb648a558caf-7196430.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5243\"\/><figcaption>An expert on moving to Italy shares his top tips and biggest mistakes to avoid for soon-to-be expats.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Copyright\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/11\/16\/i-moved-to-italy-35-years-ago-heres-what-i-wish-i-had-known-before-becoming-an-expat#\">Karsten Winegeart<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><strong>Don\u2019t underestimate the importance of learning the language<\/strong><\/p><p>For O\u2019Farrell, from personal experience, not learning Italian is the number one mistake someone can make when thinking of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/08\/25\/italy-you-could-get-paid-15000-to-move-to-this-stunning-island-but-heres-the-catch\"><strong>moving to Italy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>He says many people erroneously think they can get by using English. \u201cIt is so difficult to do anything without the language,\u201d he says, \u201cit\u2019s an uphill battle.\u201d<\/p><p>Besides struggling with bureaucratic hurdles like registering for residency, O\u2019Farrell says not\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/11\/03\/looking-to-move-abroad-these-are-the-easiest-countries-in-europe-to-learn-the-language\"><strong>knowing the language<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0means job opportunities are very limited.<\/p><p>It also makes it hard to make friends and feel like part of a community.<\/p><p><strong>Make sure you understand your legal status in Italy<\/strong><\/p><p>In order not to fall foul of the law, O\u2019Farrell reminds soon-to-be expats to be fully aware of their immigration status. He says one of the most asked questions on his website is how to live legally in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/07\/01\/think-you-know-italy-now-it-wants-you-to-explore-its-hidden-attractions\"><strong>Italy<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p><p>Non-EU citizens can come to Italy for tourism reasons and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
