She had previously called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cash\/2019\/italian-govt-to-pay-consumers-to-ditch-cash-for-digital-payments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limits on cash<\/a>&nbsp;an attempt by the government to overstep the bounds of its power.<\/p><p>The FT said the move could see resistance from the European Union, which has wanted Italy to increase its digital payment use. And opposition politicians said Meloni would be moving the country backward.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a mistake that will increase tax evasion,\u201d Carlo Calenda, who leads the centrist Azione Party, told the Financial Times. \u201cIt\u2019s designed to satisfy small businesses that work mainly with cash to avoid tax payments.\u201d<\/p><p>The report noted that Italy is one of Europe\u2019s lowest digital payment adopters, citing figures from the Bank of Italy.
