In 79 C.E., the eruption of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Vesuvius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mount Vesuvius<\/a>\u00a0buried the site\u00a0under volcanic ash; archaeologists excavated it in the late 19th century.\u00a0<\/p><p>On Tuesday, officials unveiled the newly restored home, welcoming tourists to observe the ancient architecture and elegant frescoes.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/4n5lJhsw4APYdn6vC2dKhn8zW30=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(3000x2000:3001x2001)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/04\/e2\/04e22afe-8e18-4e54-9159-d79eab9b76f0\/gettyimages-1246129513.jpg\" alt=\"Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano (C), cuts the ribbon at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii\"\/><figcaption><sup>Italy&#8217;s culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, cuts the ribbon at the reopening of the House of the Vettii.\u00a0Stringer \/ Anadolu Agency via Getty Images<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cThis is the house which tells the story of Roman society,\u201d Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pompeiisites.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pompeii archaeological park<\/a>, tells the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jan\/10\/astonishing-pompeii-home-of-men-freed-from-slavery-reopens-to-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Angela Giuffrida. \u201cOn the one hand you have the artwork, paintings and statues, and on the other you have the social story [of the freed slaves]. The house is one of the relatively few in Pompeii for which we have the names of the owners.\u201d<\/p><p>Those names are Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva.
