With its sun-soaked coastline and laidback lifestyle, the Mediterranean country is an alluring place to become an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/tag\/expatriates\"><strong>expat<\/strong><\/a>. But moving there permanently can mean mountains of paperwork and months of unexplained delays.<\/p><p>Recently, Italy&#8217;s business minister Adolfo Urso announced plans to market the country as an ideal base for remote workers and digital nomads.<\/p><p>\u201cIn the coming months we will draw up a comprehensive legislative proposal making it clear that the best place to live is Italy,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>Details of the minister\u2019s plan are yet to be released, but the news has been welcomed by professionals hoping to relocate to Italy.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Each year, the Italian government also offers a glimmer of hope when it announces\u00a0how many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/01\/19\/skilled-workers-are-in-demand-as-germany-tackles-labour-shortage-with-new-points-based-vis\"><strong>work permits<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0it will grant to non-EU citizens.<\/p><p>The 2023 quota, published in the government\u2019s Official Gazette last week, is 82,705. This is significantly higher than in previous years, with less than 67,000 permits issued in 2022.<\/p><p>Here\u2019s which industries are being targeted this year and what hoops you\u2019ll need to jump through to make your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/01\/12\/a-cultural-camino-discover-this-new-walking-route-between-two-up-and-coming-italian-cities\"><strong>Italian<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0dreams a reality.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can apply for a work permit in Italy?<\/h2><p>Each year, Italy releases the \u2018decreto flussi\u2019, a government decree that sets out its annual work permit quotas and caveats.<\/p><p>Of the 82,705 work permits to be issued this year, 44,000 are reserved for seasonal work, such as fruit picking.<\/p><p>The remaining permits will be granted for non-seasonal or self-employed work. The majority (30,105 of 38,705) are reserved for specific&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/09\/11\/moving-to-germany-will-be-easier-if-you-can-fill-one-of-these-skills-gaps\"><strong>industries<\/strong><\/a>. These include:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Road haulage<\/li><li>Construction<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/tag\/hotel-industry\"><strong>Hotels<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and tourism<\/li><\/ul><p>New for 2023:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mechanics<\/li><li>Telecommunications<\/li><li>Food<\/li><li>Shipbuilding<\/li><\/ul><p>Don\u2019t forget that as well as a permit, all foreign workers must obtain a work&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/tag\/visa\"><strong>visa<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and residence permit.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I get a work permit in Italy if I am self-employed?<\/h2><p>As in previous years, in 2023 only 500 permits will be issued to self-employed workers in Italy.
