{"id":6041,"date":"2023-04-04T10:06:18","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T14:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/?p=6041"},"modified":"2023-04-04T10:06:21","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T14:06:21","slug":"italian-government-seeks-to-penalize-the-use-of-english-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/04\/italian-government-seeks-to-penalize-the-use-of-english-words\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian government seeks to penalize the use of English words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by\u00a0Barbie Latza Nadeau for CNN &#8211;<\/em><\/strong> Italians who use English and other foreign words in official communications could face fines of up to \u20ac100,000 ($108,705) under new legislation introduced by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/22\/europe\/giorgia-meloni-italy-new-prime-minister-intl-cmd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Brothers of Italy party.<\/p><p>Fabio Rampelli, a member of the lower chamber of deputies, introduced the legislation, which is supported by the prime minister.<\/p><p>While the legislation encompasses all foreign languages, it is particularly geared at \u201cAnglomania\u201d or use of English words, which the draft states \u201cdemeans and mortifies\u201d the Italian language, adding that it is even worse because the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/30\/uk\/uk-migrants-small-boats-military-barracks-intl-gbr\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK<\/a>&nbsp;is no longer part of the EU.<\/p><p>The bill, which has yet to go up for parliamentary debate, requires anyone who holds an office in public administration to have \u201cwritten and oral knowledge and mastery of the Italian language.\u201d It also prohibits use of English in official documentation, including \u201cacronyms and names\u201d of job roles in companies operating in the country.<\/p><p>Foreign entities would have to have Italian language editions of all internal regulations and employment contracts, according to a draft of the legislation seen by CNN.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cIt is not just a matter of fashion, as fashions pass, but Anglomania has repercussions for society as a whole,\u201d the draft bill states.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>The first article of the legislation guarantees that even in offices that deal with non Italian-speaking foreigners, Italian must be the primary language used.<\/p><p>Article 2 would make Italian \u201cmandatory for the promotion and use of public goods and services in the national territory.\u201d Not doing so could garner fines between \u20ac5,000 ($5,435) and \u20ac100,000 ($108,705).<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/01\/europe\/italian-government-penalize-english-words-intl\/index.html?fbclid=IwAR0D7PvqwaBI-0fRFodtucs9-VUgIueh-A0Ro2WVdENFhLYbTtTOYxxc-nQ\">Read more here<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by\u00a0Barbie Latza Nadeau for CNN &#8211;
