<\/em><\/strong>Tourists who destroyed an Italian sculpture valued at \u20ac200,000 have been denounced as \u201cimbeciles\u201d by the country\u2019s deputy prime minister, with a local politician demanding reparations for their actions.<\/p><p>A group of 17 tourists were renting a villa in the town of Viggiu, in the northern Italian region of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/lombardy\">Lombardy<\/a>, when the damage to the 150-year-old artwork occurred \u2013 and was captured on CCTV.<\/p><p>Two of the group climbed into the fountain to wrap their arms around the sculpture,\u00a0<em>Domina<\/em>\u00a0by the artist Enrico Butti, while another pushed it with a stick before it crashed to the ground.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"928\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1.jpg 928w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1-768x391.jpg 768w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1-600x305.jpg 600w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1-118x60.jpg 118w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/broken-domina-statue-1-177x90.jpg 177w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\" \/><\/figure><p>Bruno Golferini, the manager of Villa Aleco, told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;that he had reported all of those staying to the police, though they have since left&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/independent-traveller\/collection\/hotels-in-italy\">Italy<\/a>.<\/p><p>\u201cWhen we realised it, it was too late,\u201d Mr Golferini told Italian news station\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tgcom24.mediaset.it\/\"><em>TGCOM24<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe boys did not respect the ban on entering the fountain and were filmed by video surveillance cameras while two of them embraced the statue, dropping it and destroying it, while four of their comrades shot videos with their cell phones.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/italy-tourists-destroy-statue-cctv-b2389985.html\">Read more here<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those behind the damage \u2018must pay a steep price\u2019, says regional politician By Benjamin Parker The Independent &#8211;
