By\u00a0Maureen O’Hare<\/a> for CNN – Love is in the air – or at least, it\u2019s really high up a cliff.<\/p>

Italy\u2019s Via dell\u2019Amore (\u201cPath of Love\u201d) bills itself as \u201cthe most romantic walk in the world.\u201d It\u2019s long been the most popular hiking path in the roughly 75 miles (121 kilometers) of trails that wind around the five villages that make up the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>

It closed after a landslide in 2012, but now \u2013 after a lengthy refurbishment \u2013 the first section has reopened for a summer preview until September 30. The full trail will reopen in July 2024.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>

To combat overtourism in what is one of the most visited regions in one of the world\u2019s most visited countries, access is now only by\u00a0guided tour<\/a>\u00a0(tickets are just over $5) to protect the landscape for future generations. Tourists are reminded to be respectful of local culture and heritage, lest the \u201cpath of love\u201d turn into a\u00a0\u201cwalk of shame.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>
