Actor Pierfrancesco Favino called out Driver’s casting as Enzo Ferrari at the Venice Film Festival<\/h3>

NME –<\/strong> A producer on Michael Mann\u2019s upcoming film\u00a0Ferrari<\/em>\u00a0has defended the casting of\u00a0Adam Driver<\/a>\u00a0against claims of cultural appropriation.<\/p>

Andrea Iervolino, an Italian-Canadian film producer on the Enzo Ferrari biopic, rebuked claims made against Driver\u2019s casting by actor Pierfrancesco Favino, who questioned why Italian actors were not cast more often in Hollywood films.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>

In response, Iervolino said Italy had failed in comparison to other countries in producing Hollywood stars with worldwide visibility, citing examples like Javier Bardem and Antonio Banderas from Spain, and Marion Cotillard and Vincent Cassel from France.<\/p>

Speaking at the festival (via the\u00a0Telegraph<\/em><\/a>), Ierovlino said: \u201cItalian cinema needs to look beyond Italy and come up with synergies with the international film industry, which wants to invest in Italian icons. Films like\u00a0Ferrari<\/em>, which will be distributed in 150 countries, promote Italy and Italian genius.\u201d<\/p>

The producer called on the Italian film industry to \u201cmake films based on stories that speak to the whole world, with international stars who work side by side with our own talent\u201d.<\/p>

In his original comments, Favino, who stars in a movie called Comandante<\/em> which opened this year\u2019s festival, asked why actors on the level of Toni Servillo (The Great Beauty<\/em>) were not cast more often in Hollywood productions.<\/p>

\u201cThere\u2019s an issue of cultural appropriation,\u201d Favino said.<\/p>

\u201cInstead, the parts are given to foreign actors who are distant from the story\u2019s real protagonists, starting with the exotic accents,\u201d he added. \u201cIf a Cuban can\u2019t play a Mexican, why can an American play an Italian? It only happens with us.\u00a0In another time (Vittorio) Gassman would have played\u00a0Ferrari<\/em>. Now, Driver does it and no one says anything.\u201d<\/p>

Driver previously played Italian businessman Maurizio Gucci in Ridley Scott\u2019s\u00a0House Of Gucci<\/em>, where he starred alongside fellow American actors\u00a0Lady Gaga<\/a>, Jared Leto and Al Pacino in Italian roles.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>

It comes after several controversial casting issues in recent months. Bradley Cooper was recently defended by Leonard Bernstein\u2019s family<\/a> for playing the Jewish composer with a prosthetic nose, while the casting of non-Jewish actor Cillian Murphy to play the lead role in Christopher Nolan\u2019s Oppenheimer<\/em>, a Jewish nuclear physicist, similarly faced scrutiny<\/a>.<\/p>

Alongside Driver, Ferrari<\/em> stars Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Gabriel Leone, Sarah Gadon, Jack O\u2019Connell and Patrick Dempsey. The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 25 in the US.<\/p>
