{"id":6777,"date":"2023-09-19T05:55:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T09:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/?p=6777"},"modified":"2023-09-19T05:56:50","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T09:56:50","slug":"this-town-in-italy-is-giving-3-months-of-free-rent-to-digital-nomads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/19\/this-town-in-italy-is-giving-3-months-of-free-rent-to-digital-nomads\/","title":{"rendered":"This Town In Italy Is Giving 3 Months Of Free Rent To Digital Nomads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Traveling Lifestyle &#8211;<\/em><\/strong> Los Angeles-based software designer Clarese Partis, 39, has always wanted to work in a unique place away from the hustle and bustle.<\/p><p>Therefore, she seized the chance when it was presented to her.<\/p><p>Partis arrived in the Italian Sardinian village of Ollolai last week\u00a0<strong>for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/15\/digital-nomads-can-live-for-free-in-sardinia-heres-how-to-apply.html\">free stay<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0funded by the municipality.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>The stay is part of a program for digital nomads who want to move temporarily to work near farmers and grazing sheep in the center of the island.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>\u201cI have been traveling as a digital nomad since the past two years, last in Zanzibar,\u201d said Partis, but \u201cwhen the opportunity for Ollolai came along I was excited to give it a try.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u201cI felt I needed a change of place,\u201d she said, \u201cnot a touristy one, but [instead] surrounded by nature, fresh air, mountains, beautiful beaches, where I could find more solace, peace and a slower-paced lifestyle.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The village of Ollolai<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-107x60.jpg 107w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1-160x90.jpg 160w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/digital-nomads2-1.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><p>Ollolai is situated in the untamed Barbagia region, a considerable distance away from Sardinia\u2019s popular coastal areas frequented by VIPs. It is a place where ancient traditions continue to thrive.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>The population of Ollolai has dropped from 2,250 to 1,300 over the last century, with only a few children born each year.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>To revive the old village,in 2018 the municipality implemented a widely known plan: the sale of old houses for one euro.<\/p><p>\u201cThat was a major success \u2014 many foreigners bought and restyled dozens of forsaken dwellings,\u201d said Mayor Francesco Columbu told CNBC. \u201cNow, after investing in high-speed internet, with this new project \u2018Work from Ollolai\u2019 we want to make our village a digital nomad hub.\u201d<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free stays for Digital Nomads<\/h2><p>Ollolai City Hall has set aside 20,000 euros ($21,460) to house 30 employees from different parts of the world who can stay in the municipality consecutively over the next two years.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>Applications can be submitted online through December. The maximum length of stay for non-Europeans in Italy without a visa is three months, and those who are selected can stay there for free for up to three months at a time.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>According to Veronica Matta, head of the Sa Mata Cultural Association, which coordinates the initiative \u201cWork from Ollolai\u201d, the next remote worker will come from Singapore.<\/p><p>\u201cWe expect a lot of Americans,\u201d she said. \u201cOur goal is to revive Ollolai with new people of different cultures and languages that may share their experience [as] digital nomads with the residents.\u201d<\/p><p>A furnished two-bedroom home will cost about 350 euros per month to rent from local families, with money allocated from City Hall funds for this purpose.
