How do you make one of the world\u2019s most famous ancient sites bigger?<\/p><p>You can\u2019t build more of it. You can excavate more, but at immense cost.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>So with ever more tourists cramming onto the site, the team behind the archaeological park of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/pompeii-new-excavations-looting\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pompeii<\/a>\u00a0have found a plan B \u2013 dispersing visitors around ancient sites that are further afield, with all-in-one tickets and shuttles laid on between the sites.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>Grande Pompei will be a \u201cparco diffuso\u201d or scattered archaeological park, incorporating the archaeological areas of Pompeii itself, as well as villas at nearby Boscoreale, Oplontis (in the modern town of Torre Annunziata) and Stabiae, at modern Castellammare di Stabia.<\/p><p>In a visit to Pompeii last week,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aise.it\/cultura\/grande-progetto-pompei-il-ministro-sangiuliano-in-visita-con-la-commissaria-ue-ferreira\/195580\/142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speaking to reporters<\/a>, Italy\u2019s culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, dubbed it a \u201cscattered museum,\u201d calling it a \u201cprogram of sustainable enhancement of the archaeological sites of the [archaeological] park and of the area surrounding it.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7088\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1-135x90.jpg 135w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-2-1.jpg 1110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption><sup>Shuttles will take visitors to sites including Villa San Marco at Castellammare di Stabia. \/ Bildagentur-online\/Universal Images Group Editorial\/Getty Images<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The sites already form part of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, but until now, they have been ticketed separately. They are also relatively far apart \u2013 the park\u2019s sites span around 8 miles \u2013 with little public transport to some of them. A shuttle service around the sites \u2013 the Pompeii Artebus \u2013 was piloted in 2021.<\/p><p>Their inaccessibility means that visitor numbers are low. While nearly four million people visited Pompeii itself in 2019, just 55,000 made it to see Villa A (thought to have been owned by the emperor Nero and his second wife, Poppaea Sabina, whom he murdered) at Oplontis. Only 52,000 got as far as the two villas at Stabiae, Villa Arianna and Villa San Marco.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Yet Pompeii is stuffed to the gills. Visitor numbers rose from under 2.7 million in 2014 to over 3.9 million by 2019. In July 2023, a record<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmattino.it\/cultura\/mostre\/pompei_record_di_visitatori_e_incassi_nel_parco_archeologico_21_141-7542783.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a021,141 people visited the park in a single day<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>2023 also saw the launch of a direct high speed train to Pompeii from Rome. However the train only runs on one Sunday per month, adding to the weight of daytrippers. The ancient city was the most visited heritage site in Italy on the last \u201cDomenica al Museo\u201d \u2013 state-run heritage sites have free entry on the first Sunday of the month.<\/p><p>Tickets for the \u2018scattered\u2019 site will be valid for three days, with free shuttles connecting all the sites.<\/p><p>The move will also see the reopening of the Antiquarium, a museum beside Boscoreale\u2019s Villa Regina. It\u2019ll have a room dedicated to the current excavations in Civita Giuliana, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/travel\/article\/pompeii-new-excavations-looting\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ceremonial carriage<\/a>&nbsp;found in March 2021.<\/p><p>The Villa dei Misteri at Pompeii will also get new lighting which will better replicate the original lighting in the villa.<\/p><p>The move comes on the heels of the Grande Progetto Pompei, or Great Pompeii Project, which has overseen renovations across the sites for the past decade, funded to the tune of 105 million euros by the European Union.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"671\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-1024x671.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7089\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-600x393.jpg 600w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-92x60.jpg 92w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1-137x90.jpg 137w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Pompei-new-site-3-1.jpg 1071w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><sup>The &#8216;Villa Poppaea&#8217; at Oplontis is thought to have been owned by the emperor Nero and his wife Poppaea. \/ DeAgostini\/Getty Images<\/sup><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Major excavations have taken place at Civita Giuliana, where the remains of horses were discovered in 2018, and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/pompeii-chariot-discovery-intl-scli-scn\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chariot<\/a>&nbsp;in 2021, as well as a room that sheds new light on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/travel\/article\/slaves-ancient-rome-pompeii-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lives of slaves<\/a>.
