And it might not even be real"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CNN\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Olive oil has been a staple of the Mediterranean diet and culture for millennia. Before it ever made it to the table, it was used for medicinal and religious practices, earning the moniker \u201cliquid gold\u201d in Homer\u2019s \u201cIliad.\u201d<\/p><p>Throughout the centuries the olive branch has come to symbolize peace and prosperity, and pungent extra virgin and virgin olive oils are high-value global exports.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/valued%20at%20$22.3%20billion%20in%202022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valued at $22.3 billion in 2022<\/a>, the olive oil market is expected to increase exponentially over the next decade.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>But behind the most popular extra virgin olive oils in the world &#8211; produced in Italy, Spain and Greece &#8211; are equally lucrative criminal enterprises cashing in on the gold rush by selling fake liquid gold that uses sunflower, canola or even lamp oil to create a product that can retail for up to $30 a liter in the United States.<\/p><p>In late November, authorities in Spain and Italy working with the EU\u2019s Europol law enforcement agency said they arrested 11 people tied to one such criminal gang, sequestering 12 barrels containing some 260,000 liters of adulterated, or non-virgin or extra-virgin olive oil.<\/p><p>They also seized an additional 5,200 liters of market-ready quality oil that had been ready for export. The authorities said it was \u201cunfit for consumption,\u201d despite false labeling that claimed the oil was 100% Italian or Spanish.<\/p><p>Authorities also found 91,000 euros (almost $100,000) in cash, four high-end vehicles, falsified labels, and paperwork that stated the oil was Spanish and Italian-grown when sample tests revealed it was more likely made by mixing olive oil byproducts with other types of oil.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rising-demand\">Rising demand<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-1024x647.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7255\" width=\"842\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-1024x647.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-768x485.jpg 768w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-600x379.jpg 600w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-95x60.jpg 95w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1-142x90.jpg 142w, https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/gettyimages-1152933021-1.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 842px) 100vw, 842px\" \/><figcaption><sub>Demand for olive oil and recent struggling harvests have led to sharp increases in the price of olive oil.<\/sub> <sub>\/ Budrul Chukrut\/SOPA Images\/LightRocket\/Getty Images<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cA mix of various factors, such as the general inflation of prices, reduced olive oil production and increasing demand, have created the perfect breeding ground for fraudulent producers,\u201d according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/media-press\/newsroom\/news\/11-olive-oil-counterfeiters-arrested-following-operation-opson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Europol statement.<\/a><\/p><p>\u201cUnfortunately, the faking of extra virgin olive oil is a common practice, which is why the fight against it is a law enforcement priority \u2014 especially in production countries,\u201d the law enforcement agency added.<\/p><p>Infusing high quality olive oil with lesser products has become a common practice as rising demand for Mediterranean oil exports is countered by lower production rates driven by increasingly harsh weather extremes, says Coldiretti, Italy\u2019s main farming organization.<\/p><p>Fraudsters have also increasingly been using chlorophyll or beta carotene to color the oil its characteristic green or buttery yellow hues.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>In 2023, Mediterranean oil production was down by 41%, Coldiretti said. An extremely wet spring meant olive trees flowered less and record-setting heat in summer shriveled the olives that did grow.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure><p>That\u2019s left producers unable to meet marketplace demand.<\/p><p>The so-called \u201cagri mafia\u201d in the Mediterranean oil producing regions has been moving in to fill the gaps in supply, developing its fake extra virgin olive oil operations.<\/p><p>\u201cMixing consumer-grade olive oil with lower grade alternatives allowed the criminals to offer competitive prices while entering legal supply chains,\u201d Europol says.<\/p><p>\u201cThis illegal practice can not only cause a public health risk, but also undermine consumer trust and thus have further economic repercussions,\u201d the statement warned.<\/p><p>According to the North American Olive Oil Association, it\u2019s highly unlikely bogus olive oil products would go on sale in the US, with research by the Food and Drug Administration finding no adulteration in samples tested.<\/p><p>\u201cIn reality, US consumers should have a high level of confidence in the quality and authenticity of the olive oil they buy,\u201d said Joseph R. Profaci, the NAOOA\u2019s executive director.<\/p><p>Profaci said the NAOOA was undertaking its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/business\/u-s-trade-group-announces-olive-oil-quality-testing-initiative\/125671\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most comprehensive, rigorous olive oil testing study<\/a>&nbsp;to date to ensure adulterated products weren\u2019t infiltrating US markets.<\/p><p>\u201cWhile our routine testing hasn\u2019t indicated any rise in intentionally mislabeled or adulterated olive oil in 2023, the current high prices and tight supplies may create an additional incentive for wrongdoing.
