Roberto Saviano\u2019s popular \u2018Gomorrah\u2019 investigative journalism series, depicting the grittiness of life in the Neapolitan suburbs, has further helped consolidate its image as a crime-ridden and trash-laden urban jungle.<\/p><p>It comes as little surprise that tourists generally steer clear of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/06\/26\/superyacht-ban-naples-bans-vessels-over-75-metres-to-dismay-of-multibillionaires\"><strong>Naples<\/strong><\/a>, merely stopping en route to Capri and Amalfi\u2019s beaches or Pompeii\u2019s ruins.<\/p><p>But now that Naples and its residents are actively fighting to shake off its bad image, is it time we embraced the unspoken beauties the city has to offer and lay negative stereotypes to rest?<\/p><p>Here\u2019s why Naples should top your travel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/11\/17\/turkey-instead-of-saint-tropez-destination-dupes-could-help-you-avoid-the-crowds-in-2024\"><strong>bucket list<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in 2024 &#8211; and why it\u2019s criminal to skip it.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Baroque churches to hidden alleyways: Naples\u2019s artistic wonders<\/h2><p>Following Naples\u2019 historical fall from grace, the city\u2019s long struggle with poverty and crime has led it to be rejected by Italians and tourists alike.<\/p><p>Indeed, rejection is at the heart of the city\u2019s very own founding mythology. As legend has it, the siren Parthenope killed herself after being rejected by Odysseus, and was washed to the shores of what would later become Naples.<\/p><p>Like many, I came to the city with deep-seated preconceptions. But I left with an entirely different view.<\/p><p>If nostalgia is Italy\u2019s currency, chaos its heartbeat, football its religion, and religion its mask, nowhere better encapsulates this than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/10\/06\/is-it-safe-to-travel-to-naples-italy-plans-for-possible-evacuations-from-super-volcano\"><strong>Naples<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s the city\u2019s unique juxtaposition of glamour and grit that make it so intriguing.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Naples-underated4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7366\"\/><figcaption><sup><em>Quartieri Spagnoli is a tight maze of alleyways. <\/em>Canva<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If you head to the city\u2019s grand seafront promenade, all the way to the neoclassical colonnades of Piazza del Plebescito, the majestic Palazzo Reale (royal palace) and San Carlo opera house, you will get a taste of the Neapolitan aristocracy and all its pomp.<\/p><p>Hidden behind the grandeur, on the other hand, lie the working-class Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarters). A tight maze of alleyways, the neighbourhood offers a concentrated burst of colour (azure, the colour of the SSC Napoli football team, predominates) and Neapolitan street life where the local dialect &#8211; rather than Italian &#8211; is the unofficial language.<\/p><p>Lovers of all things holy may eschew Naples in favour of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2021\/12\/21\/rome-everything-you-need-to-know-to-plan-the-perfect-end-of-year-break\"><strong>Rome<\/strong><\/a>, where you can take your pick from 900 churches, but the southern Italian city has plenty to offer too.<\/p><p>From paleo-Christian catacombs to the medieval tiled cloisters of Santa Chiara and the Baroque magnificence of the Ges\u00f9 Nuovo church, the city has more than enough to keep any architecture aficionado occupied.<\/p><p>Unlike in Rome, where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/10\/16\/jerusalem-bethlehem-tourism-reels-from-israel-hamas-war-during-busy-period-for-pilgrimages\"><strong>religion<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is theatrical but sometimes lacks substance, it\u2019s in the blood and bones of Neapolitan life.&nbsp;<\/p><p>So much so that every 16 December, the city\u2019s residents anxiously wait for the patron Saint Januarius\u2019s dried blood &#8211; stored at Naples Cathedral &#8211; to liquefy as a signal of good fortune in the coming year&nbsp;(rest assured, 2023 brought good news).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A foodie paradise: What are the best things to eat in Naples?<\/h2><p>At the risk of igniting culinary wars, I&#8217;d back Naples as Italy\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/04\/29\/want-to-travel-more-sustainably-try-eating-your-way-around-europes-seasonal-delights\"><strong>food<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;capital (Bologna a close second).<\/p><p>It\u2019s the city that gave us pizza after all, with the Margherita &#8211; created to honour Italy\u2019s queen in 1889 &#8211; being a time-honoured staple at renowned pizzerias like Da Michele or Gino Sorbillo.<\/p><p>But Naples has far more to offer than a single&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/02\/15\/pasta-classes-tapas-crawls-and-wine-tastings-7-of-europes-best-food-adventures\"><strong>dish<\/strong><\/a>. At its heart, Neapolitan cuisine is fresh street food that has benefitted from an enviable location.&nbsp;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/bottega-pizza-768x512-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7368\"\/><\/figure><p>A stone\u2019s throw from the sea and an hour\u2019s drive from Amalfi\u2019s fragrant orchards, Naples has access to exquisite natural produce, giving us unfussy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2023\/05\/23\/meal-of-the-week-taking-it-to-the-streets-a-savoury-neapolitan-sandwich\"><strong>recipes<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;such as spaghetti&nbsp;<em>alle vongole<\/em>&nbsp;(clam spaghetti),&nbsp;<em>pasta alla puttanesca<\/em>&nbsp;(pasta with capers and anchovies),&nbsp;<em>risotto alla pescatora<\/em>&nbsp;(seafood risotto)&nbsp;<em>and insalata caprese<\/em>&nbsp;(mozzarella and tomato salad).<\/p><p>Savoury simplicity is replaced with extravagance in the dessert realm, as Neapolitan pastries &#8211; from the rum-soaked baba to the crispy sfogliatelle &#8211; are a moreish, unexpected delight.<\/p><p>For an equally decadent experience, the 19th-century Caff\u00e8 Gambrinus allows you to enjoy Neapolitan treats surrounded by fin-de-si\u00e8cle decor.<\/p><p>And you don\u2019t need to spend lots or even step too far out to experience the best food Naples has to offer. Around the corner from the central station is a bona fide institution for anyone with a sweet tooth: Cuori di Sfogliatella, which sells mouth-watering pastries and sfogliatelle that you can customise as you please.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018We will win back the heart of Italy\u2019<\/h2><p>Neapolitans have suffered enough at the hands of crime gangs and incompetent public administration. They have also endured the consequences of living with a bad name. As the Italian saying goes,&nbsp;<em>la parola uccide<\/em>&nbsp;(words kill).<\/p><p>But in recent years, Naples has witnessed a boost in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2021\/01\/29\/why-is-community-immersion-the-future-of-responsible-tourism\"><strong>tourism<\/strong><\/a>, and the city\u2019s residents are going to great &#8211; and often creative &#8211; lengths to dispel negative stereotypes.<\/p><p>Taking to social media, certain Naples-based artists have been celebrating and re-imagining their hometown to defy negative stereotypes.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Naples-underated3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7367\"\/><figcaption><sup><em>A statuette by Nativity artist Gennaro Di Virgilio portraying soccer legend Diego Armando Maradona with angel&#8217;s wings in Naples, Italy.<\/em>AP Photo\/Salvatore Laporta<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cFighting stereotypes and prejudices is hard, but I am trying,\u201d Antonio Avitabile, an Instagram-based influencer and artist, tells Euronews Travel. While he notes that the city still faces some structural challenges, he is optimistic that the good will of Neapolitans could help<\/p><p>\u201cIf all goes well, Naples will slowly rise up in the future, and we will win back the heart of Italy &#8211; for now, we have the heart of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/06\/01\/venice-florence-skye-overtourism-how-residents-feel-about-travellers-return\"><strong>tourists<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<\/p><p>Among his artwork are AI-generated images of Naples portrayed as if it were a Disney film &#8211; \u201cto show Naples in a different light,\u201d Antonio says.<\/p><p>The reality isn\u2019t all that far off from this vision. Naples is a true fairytale city come to life, with everything that life entails &#8211; warts and all.<\/p><p>It may still be the victim of prejudice, but that shouldn\u2019t stop you from visiting what is arguably Europe\u2019s most misunderstood city.
