Each year, over \u20ac1 million ends up in the water of the spectacular 18th century monument. But where does all this money go? <\/p><p>For over a decade, the windfall &#8211; collected by a dedicated team every few months &#8211; has been contributing to a very good cause.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do people throw coins into the Trevi Fountain?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/trevi-fountain-with-piazza-1024x583.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7400\"\/><\/figure><p>Built between 1732 and 1762, the Trevi Fountain is one of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2021\/12\/21\/rome-everything-you-need-to-know-to-plan-the-perfect-end-of-year-break\"><strong>Rome\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;most iconic sights. It was designed by Nicola Salvi and represents the taming of the waters.<\/p><p>Against a monumental facade of giant Corinthian pilasters, river god Oceanus rides a shell chariot pulled by sea horses.<\/p><p>One of the creatures is docile while the other rears wildly, representing the contrasting characters of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/10\/09\/sailing-from-belfast-to-inverness-why-i-chose-11-days-at-sea-over-a-1-hour-flight\"><strong>sea<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>As per tradition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/12\/05\/sex-drugs-and-drink-amsterdam-tourism-campaign-wants-to-discourage-nuisance-british-touris\"><strong>tourists<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0stand with their backs facing the monument and toss a coin over their left shoulder with their right hand into the water.<\/p><p>The ritual was made famous by the 1954 film &#8220;Three Coins in the Fountain&#8221; and is supposed to guarantee the visitor\u2019s return to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/03\/28\/italy-travel-guide-how-to-experience-the-world-s-most-beautiful-country-like-a-local\"><strong>Eternal City<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much money gets thrown into the Trevi Fountain?<\/h2><p>Each day, around \u20ac3,000 of loose change ends up in the Trevi Fountain.<\/p><p>That works out as up to \u20ac1.5 million tossed into its waters each year.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens to the money thrown into the Trevi Fountain?<\/h2><p>A couple of times a year, the city sends in a team to collect the fortune.<\/p><p>The workers use brushes on the end of long poles to sweep the coins into piles and then use a suction hose to extract the money from the water.<\/p><p>The coins are then bagged under the watchful eye of the police.<\/p><p>In 2001, the mayor decided that the money should be collected for a local charity to put a stop to the frequent attempts by people to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/08\/17\/how-can-barcelona-shake-off-its-reputation-as-the-bag-snatching-capital-of-spain\"><strong>steal<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;coins from the fountain.<\/p><p>Since then, the loose change that ends up in the fountain has been donated each year to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/10\/08\/14-days-in-italy-a-complete-guide-to-travelling-by-train-for-a-whistle-stop-tour-of-the-co\"><strong>Rome\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;Catholic charity Caritas.<\/p><p>It has been a huge boost for the charity and the sum now makes up 15 per cent of its annual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/11\/17\/budget-travellers-should-head-to-this-under-the-radar-spanish-city-for-free-museums-and-ba\"><strong>budget<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>The group uses the money to help the city\u2019s poor and needy.
