The Guardian – An Italian restaurant is offering a free bottle of wine to customers who relinquish their mobile phones during meals. Angelo Lella, the owner of Al Condominio, a restaurant that opened in the northern city of Verona in March, said the aim was to encourage diners chat to each other instead of constantly glancing at their phones. “We wanted to open a restaurant that was different from the others,” he said. “So we picked this format – customers can choose to renounce technology while enjoying a convivial moment together. Technology is becoming a problem – there is no need to look at your phone every five seconds, but for many people it is like a drug … This way they have an opportunity to put it aside and drink some good wine.”

The post Restaurant in Italy offers free bottles of wine to customers who hand in phones first appeared on Panoram Italia.

CBS News – Beneath the honking horns and operatic yelling of Naples, the most blissfully chaotic city in Italy, archeologist Raffaella Bosso descends into the deafening silence of an underground maze, zigzagging back in time roughly 2,300 years.

Before the Ancient Romans, it was the Ancient Greeks who colonized Naples, leaving behind traces of life, and death, inside ancient burial chambers, she says. She points a flashlight at a stone-relief tombstone that depicts the legs and feet of those buried inside. “There are two people, a man and a woman” in this one tomb, she explains. “Normally you can find eight or even more.” This tomb was discovered in 1981, the old-fashioned way, by digging. Now, archeologists are joining forces with physicists, trading their pickaxes for subatomic particle detectors about the size of a household microwave.

The post New technology allows archaeologists to use particle physics to explore the past first appeared on Panoram Italia.

Constructed in the ninth century BC, the 16-foot tall “Bull of Nimrud” was destroyed by ISIS fighters in 2015, before Italian artisans made a copy of the monument using 3D-printing technology. The replica was previously displayed at the Colosseum in Rome and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. It has been permanently relocated outside the entrance to the Basrah Museum in the Iraqi city of Basra.

Klaus Blume/dpa/picture-alliance/AP

The post Italy donates 3D-printed replica of statue destroyed by ISIS to Iraq first appeared on Panoram Italia.

Urethanes Technology – A 4th century statue of Emperor Constantine has been recreated for Rome’s Capitoline Museum. The 13m high colossus was reconstructed using materials including polyurethane and marble dust. Only a handful of marble fragments of the original statue remain, most of which are housed in the museum’s courtyard. The full-scale replica was created by the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation, under the supervision of the museum’s superintendent of cultural heritage, and with funding from the Prada Foundation.

The post PU used in reconstruction of giant statue of ancient Rome’s Emperor Constantine first appeared on Panoram Italia.
