Toronto Salutes Dante

Dante’s Inferno as you’ve never heard it.

Dante, known as the father of the Italian language, was born in Florence in 1265 and died in Ravenna in 1321.
His epic poem, The Divine Comedy, is considered an iconic masterpiece of medieval literature that has inspired poets and writers worldwide through the centuries.

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto kicks off its collaboration with the network of fellow Institutes in the USA with “Toronto Salutes Dante”, as part of the DANTE 700 series of events marking the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s passing.

Presented in collaboration with the University of Toronto Department of Italian Studies and the E. Goggio Chair in Italian Studies, “Toronto Salutes Dante” will present, over the next months, a series of readings of Dante’s “Inferno” in thirty-three languages, including various Italian regional dialects and the indigenous language of the Anishinaabe nation, Anishinabemowin.
