On April 6, 1520, Raffaello Sanzio, one of the geniuses of the Renaissance, passed away in Rome.

In the coming months, a live Zoom conference series featuring some of the most important experts on Raphael will be presented by the network of Italian Cultural Institutes (IIC) in the US and Canada, celebrating the Master through online multimedia initiatives.

2020 is a special year for the Vatican Museums as it is here that Raphael’s most important series of frescoes are preserved. The museum also hosts three altarpieces fundamental to an understanding of Raphael’s different artistic phases and the progression of his career in Rome—around 1508—until his premature and sudden death in 1520.

Barbara Jatta will discuss Raphael’s Vatican works and the challenges of celebrating this important anniversary during a world pandemic.

This presentation is moderated by prof. Emanuele Lugli (Stanford University).
