Event Details

Set up initially in Genoa and later in Montréal, the exhibition presents comic strips created by 24 Italian and Quebec authors, on the theme of the representation of urban space. Vicoli e Ruelles arises from a previous collaboration between the Italian curators and the BDM Festival and from the desire to compare the ways of representing two spaces which, albeit with profound differences, have points of contact: the alleys of Genoa and the ruelles of Montréal, or rather narrow, intimate, protected urban spaces, which can easily become a metaphor for our interiority and our relationships. For Genoa, the alleys are the essence of the medieval historic center, the central core of the city.

All Genoese know that the ancient urban layout is divided into two areas: that of the alleys or caruggi, the lower city, near the port, animated by a variegated humanity, sometimes in crisis but always pulsating, and that of the crêuze, the narrow streets of bricks that climb the steep hills, still dotted with gardens and orchards. The ruelles of Montréal are alleys that run behind the three-storey houses, which are overlooked by the gardens, often occupied by children playing hockey and by dogs accompanied by their owners. They are “abusive” ways as they do not have a number, but welcome forms of solidarity, posters, meetings.
