ROME, JUL 5 – Italian entertainment legend Raffaella Carrà died on Monday at the age of 78, her family said. The singer, actress, dancer and TV host, who starred with Frank Sinatra in Von Ryan’s Express in 1965 and found cult TV success in Spain and other countries, becoming a gay icon, had been ill for some time. Her widower, choreographer and director Sergio Iapino, said “her talent will shine forever”.

At the beginning of Explota Explota, a new Spanish-Italian jukebox musical comedy set at the tail end of the Franco dictatorship in 1970s Spain, airport employee Maria is making a delivery at a TV studio when she catches the attention of Chimo, the director of a variety show. When she tells him she’s not a dancer, he replies: “No dancer with blood flowing in their veins can resist this rhythm.”
He plays her Bailo Bailo, a hit by Italian pop star Raffaella Carrà, who, on top of becoming one of the best known personalities in her native Italy, ended up a sensation in the 20th-century Spanish-speaking world. Where Sweden had Abba, Italy had Carrà, who sold millions of records across Europe. Sure enough, Maria can’t resist Bailo Bailo, and Chimo hires her.

“Raffaella Carrà si è spenta alle ore 16.20 di oggi, dopo una malattia che da qualche tempo aveva attaccato quel suo corpo così minuto eppure così pieno di straripante energia”, si legge in comunicato diffuso dalle agenzie. “Una forza inarrestabile la sua, che l’ha imposta ai vertici dello star system mondiale, una volontà ferrea che fino all’ultimo non l’ha mai abbandonata, facendo si che nulla trapelasse della sua profonda sofferenza. L’ennesimo gesto d’amore verso il suo pubblico e verso coloro che ne hanno condiviso l’affetto, affinché il suo personale calvario non avesse a turbare il luminoso ricordo di lei”.
