At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages (EDL) has been celebrated every year since 2001 on September 26 – together with the European Commission. The European Day of Languages is a means of promoting awareness among the general public on the importance of language learning, encouraging the discovery of other languages at any age. This stems from the Council of Europe’s conviction that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of the continent.

This year the group of cultural and language institutes in the City of Toronto representing and promoting European culture and languages abroad, celebrate the European Day of Languages on September 25th and online for the first time. Each year the group of institutes presents a number of events, offering the public at large an opportunity to experience some of the languages and cultures that make up part of the city’s greater multicultural fabric.  Members of the public may participate in interactive class lessons on the languages and cultures of the participating countries.
