Brothers of Italy (FdI) leader Giorgia Meloni was sworn in as Italy’s first woman premier before President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday. Meloni takes over the helm of government from Mario Draghi after her FdI spearheaded the right-wing coalition to victory in last month’s general election, winning around 26% of the vote on its own. The 45-year-old Roman’s 24-strong cabinet, which features only six women ministers, was also sworn in.

She left in a sleek grey Audi limousine as her country’s prime minister—the first woman to assume that role since the birth of the Italian state in 1861.
Ms Meloni’s cabinet, which she announced shortly after her appointment by the president, Sergio Mattarella, was sworn in on October 22nd. The lineup represents several important early victories over her main coalition partners, the veteran former prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, and the leader of the Northern League, Matteo Salvini. Ms Meloni named as her justice minister Carlo Nordio, a retired prosecutor and a member of her hard-right party.
