CTVNews – ROME –  Giorgia Meloni on Friday formed Italy’s new ruling coalition, assembling the country’s first far-right-led government since the end of the Second World War and becoming the first woman to obtain the premiership.

A presidential palace official announced that Meloni and her Cabinet would be sworn in on Saturday. Meloni’s Brothers of Italy, a party with neo-fascist roots, was the top vote-getter in Italy’s national election last month.

BBC – Her rise to power at the head of the party she founded has been meteoric, but Giorgia Meloni has been politically active since she was a teenage activist in a neo-fascist party’s youth wing in Rome.

Now at 45 she has accepted the role of Italy’s first female prime minister, although she has picked a government in which only one in four ministers are women.

Brothers of Italy (FdI) leader Giorgia Meloni was sworn in as Italy’s first woman premier before President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday. Meloni takes over the helm of government from Mario Draghi after her FdI spearheaded the right-wing coalition to victory in last month’s general election, winning around 26% of the vote on its own. The 45-year-old Roman’s 24-strong cabinet, which features only six women ministers, was also sworn in.

Giorgia meloni arrived at the presidential palace in Rome on October 21st as leader of the Brothers of Italy (fdi) party and in her own car, a sassy little Fiat 500. She left in a sleek grey Audi limousine as her country’s prime minister—the first woman to assume that role since the birth of the Italian state in 1861.

Ms Meloni’s cabinet, which she announced shortly after her appointment by the president, Sergio Mattarella, was sworn in on October 22nd. The lineup represents several important early victories over her main coalition partners, the veteran former prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, and the leader of the Northern League, Matteo Salvini. Ms Meloni named as her justice minister Carlo Nordio, a retired prosecutor and a member of her hard-right party.
